For a number of years Holger Fleig (bvk) and Volker Tittel (bvk) had been searching for a camera system, that could fly with remote-control and thus allow shots, that were not possible to realize with steadicam, filmcrane or Wescam/Tailormount on a manned helicopter. Too often during our work on film sets we experienced logistic, technical or financial restrictions.
The main problem with remote-controlled helicopters was the weight of the remote-head and a high-resolution camera. The first tests as well as the first professional assignments with our "camera unleashed" in early 2010 were indeed promising.
Our innovative filming technique soon got around in the industry and received important awards. In September campilots won the "Cinec Award 2010" at the Cinec in Munich (International Trade Fair for Cine Equipment and Technology), and in December the German Minister for Culture, Bernd Neumann presented us with the prestigious "Innovationspreis des deutschen Films" ("Award for Innovation in German Filmmaking"), endowed with 25.000 Euros.
We contribute the technical as well as artistic know-how as camera men for movies and television that we have acquired over many years to our cooperation with DoPs and directors in order to realise new visual ideas for aerial shots.
After numerous exciting employments in documentaries, feature films, commercials and image films we had to redesign the initial Multicopters to meet the increasingly ambitious demands. And also the newest cameras, like the RED or recording systems in Apple Pro Res 4:2:2 with digital recorders, like the Ninja and the Nanoflash required stronger propulsions to take off and fly. Our engineer and designer Dieter Wurster accepted the challenge and developped the Multicopter VI and a newly customized remote-head, constructed for the latest generation of HD cameras – exclusively for campilots.
We now have a device which is state of the art both technically and optically and meets all professional requirements of DoPs and directors.
